Flights to Honduras
Located between the Caribbean and Pacific oceans, Honduras' natural and historical resources are its greatest draw for tourists. The Bay Islands, on Caribbean coast, offer superb diving, snorkeling and fishing around grand coral reefs. Honduras also has an extensive rainforest jungle (the largest in Central America) covering its inland territory. In addition, Honduras has the historical Mayan ruins at Copan, which are considered to be some of the best-preserved ruins in the area.
The Mayan site of Copan was discovered in 1570 by Diego García de Palacio and was one of the most important sites of the Mayan civilization. The ruins were excavated in the 19th century. The ruined citadel and public squares reveal the three main stages of development before the city was abandoned in the early 10th century. Copan has been named a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Roatan is part of the Honduras Bay Islands, located in the Caribbean Sea. The island has beautiful white and palm fringed beaches which are good for relaxing. Snorkeling and diving are popular here because of the nearness to the largest barrier reef in the Caribbean Sea.
Another UNESCO World Heritage site is located in the northwest of the country. The Río Plátano Biosphere reserve is one of the few remains of a tropical rainforest in Central America and has abundant and varied plant and wildlife. There are over 2000 indigenous people who live here and have preserved their traditional way of life in peace with the surrounding environment.
Tegucigalpa, the capital and largest city, has roughly 900,000 people living in the city. The city is located in the south central part of the country at an elevation of nearly 1000 meters above sea level. There are not many landmarks here but it is a good base for touring the area.
Toncontín International Airport is located near the capital. Flights arrive daily from Europe and America. You will find transportation at the airport in the form of taxis and buses.
